They are made by the Pinctada maxima, or gold-lipped oyster, which is the largest pearl oyster in the world and the only species capable of consistently producing pearls of this extraordinary size. The oysters are only found in small numbers in the warm waters of the South Pacific, making these pearls extremely precious.
